Commissioner Corner: Bullying prevention in Scouting
As part of our efforts to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all Scouts in the Transatlantic Council we want to address the issue of bullying within our organization. Bullying is not tolerated in Scouting America. We take all allegations seriously.
What is bullying?
Bullying is any behavior that intentionally hurts, harasses or intimidates others. This can include verbal or online actions that create a hostile or uncomfortable environment for others.
Is bullying allowed in Scouting America?
Absolutely not. Bullying is prohibited in Scouting America. We have clear policies and procedures in place to prevent and address it.
Prohibitions against bullying:
- Youth Protection Policy: Our Youth Protection Policy explicitly prohibits bullying and harassment. Requires all Scouts to treat others with kindness, respect and empathy.
- Scouting Code of Conduct: The Scouting Code of Conduct emphasizes the importance of treating others with kindness, respect and courtesy.
- Bullying and Harassment Policy: Our Bullying and Harassment Policy outlines procedures for reporting and addressing bullying incidents.
What can youth do to stop bullying?
- Report incidents: If you witness or experience bullying report it to a trusted leader, parent or authority figure
- Be an ally: Stand up for those being bullied and offer support and kindness.
- Practice empathy: Put yourself in others shoes. Try to understand their feelings and perspectives.
- Be an upstander: If you see bullying speak up. Seek help from a trusted adult.
Consequences for suspected bullying:
If a youth is suspected of bullying they may face consequences, including:
- Disciplinary action: Depending on the severity of the incident a youth may face action, including loss of privileges or temporary removal from the unit.
- Counseling: A youth may be required to participate in counseling or mediation to address their behavior and develop relationships with others.
- Parental notification: In some cases parents may be notified of the incident. May be required to attend a meeting with unit leaders.
