Unit Rechartering

Recharter Renewal

Important Renewal Timeline & Access Info

Fall Recruitment Incentives for Packs, Troops, and Crews

While Scouts and Scouters need to renew their membership individually, units must still recharter annually. Unit Renewal begins two months before the unit’s expiration date. Since most TAC units have December recharter dates, the Recharter window opens in my.scouting on November 1.

There are TAC incentives for on-time chartering for Packs and Troops/Crews.

  • Cub Scout Packs will qualify for FREE Pinewood Derby cars for ALL the youth listed on their 2026 Charter if they pay and submit their charter by November 30, 2026.
  • Scouts BSA Troops, Venturing Crews, and Ships will receive $3.00 per scout in their TAC unit account!

To help your chartering go smoothly, check your rosters now to make sure all the expected youth and leaders appear as registered on your roster!

Changes to Unit Renewal for 2027

Unit renewals start on November 1, 2026. Scouting America is moving every council towards a unified recharter schedule in 2028.

  • All renewals will be valid through February 28, 2028.
  • Unit renewal costs for the 14-month term will be $120.
  • No grace/lapsed period anymore. If not renewed, unit will be dropped on January 1, 2027.
  • If the unit drops off, all members will lose access to all online Scouting platforms, including but not limited to My. Scouting, Scoutbook, Scoutbook+, UDA Accounts, and Black Pug Software.
  • Unit renewals will align back up with membership renewals for the February 2028 joint renewal as it was previously done.
  • New units will pay a rate of $8.50/month not to exceed 18 months to get to the Feb. 2028 or Feb. 2029 renewal cycle.

Important Renewal Timeline & Access Info

  • Unit renewal opens two months prior to expiration, and units no longer have a two-month grace (lapsed) period after expiration to renew without losing access. Leaders should start early to avoid delays or “dropped” status.
  • Only the Key 3 leaders (Unit Leader, Committee Chair, Chartered Organization Rep) or their designee have access to the Unit Renewal tool in Organization Manager.
  • Validation errors that block unit renewal include:
    • Insufficient required leadership roles
    • Expired Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) for any leader
    • Leaders under 18 years old
    • Youth not meeting age or grade requirements
Leaders must resolve these errors before proceeding.
  • The Position Manager tool allows Chartered Organization Representatives to update leadership roles before renewal; however, changes can take up to 24 hours to sync before they appear for validation.

Individual Membership Renewal Support with Sam

Scouting America is introducing a new approach to help members whose memberships expire in November and December. The Movo AI assistant, Sam, will provide personalized, two-way support by text, email, and voice to guide adults and families through the membership renewal process. Sam can answer common questions, share the correct renewal links, and connect members with council or support staff when additional assistance is needed.

Outreach begins October 15 for memberships expiring November 30 and November 1 for memberships expiring December 31. This initiative applies to eligible traditional Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, and Venturing/Sea Scouting youth and adult memberships. Unit charter renewals are not included and will continue through the existing rechartering process.

Sam will help members navigate renewal, but renewals and payments must still be completed through My.Scouting. Once a member renews or opts out, Sam will stop further outreach.

Please review the PDF for an overview of the new membership renewal support process, including what families, volunteers, and councils can expect.
