Hazardous Weather Training

Hazardous Weather Training

Be Prepared

Weather can be unpredictable and, at times, dangerous. As a leader in Scouting America, ensuring the safety and well-being of Scouts in your care is a top priority. That’s why, effective April 30, 2018, all new direct contact leaders are required to complete Hazardous Weather Training to be considered position trained.

Picture this: You’ve just arrived at a council camp for a camporee on a rainy Friday afternoon, excitement buzzing among the Scouts. By Saturday, the camp comes alive with the energy of activities—until the weather takes a turn. Sustained winds of 30 mph escalate to gusts nearing 50 mph, and the once-still forest begins to sway ominously.

What would you do in this situation? Would you continue with the camporee or evacuate for safety?

This scenario is more common than you might think, and knowing how to respond could save lives. Hazardous Weather Training equips you with the knowledge and skills to assess risks, make informed decisions, and confidently lead through challenging conditions. From thunderstorms and high winds to extreme heat and cold, this training prepares leaders to safeguard everyone under their care.

Whether you’re planning a campout, a trek, or a simple day hike, Hazardous Weather Training is an essential resource for responsible leadership. Start your journey toward safer Scouting adventures today and ensure every outdoor experience is as enriching as it is secure.

This course is available around-the-clock in the BSA Learn Center by logging in to your account on My.Scouting.org.

For direct contact leaders, staying current on Hazardous Weather Training is an important part of offering a safe Scouting program and needs to be renewed every 2 years. Like Youth Protection Mandatory Training, My.Scouting will now provide notification e-mails at 14-30-60-90-day intervals prior to expiring. Upon expiration of a person’s training, an e-mail will also be sent. These notifications are important.
