Congratulations on earning the rank of Life Scout. You are among approximately 55,000 youth who year after year, achieve that important milestone. As you ponder the meaning behind the Life patch, you are encouraged to think about the symbol of the heart. Historically in Scouting, it was a fitting symbol of health and fitness, but it also represents the spirit of caring and giving that is behind the Eagle Scout service project.

Service to other people is what Scouting is all about. In many ways, your service project reflects who you are as a youth leader. Your result should be of significant impact in your community to be special, and should represent your very best effort.

Your proposal, the logical first step, should emphasize your intention to give leadership to others through proper planning and development. Communicate with the beneficiary often to ensure the project meets the organization’s needs once it is completed.

We encourage you to seek guidance from your unit leader and project coach as you need help. Your Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, much like a compass, will help navigate your way to a life of service as a proud Eagle Scout.

Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Discontinuance

 
The Citizenship in Society Merit Badge will be discontinued effective Friday, February 27, 2026. Beginning on February 27, 2026, Scouts will no longer be able to start requirements on the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge. Those Scouts who had already started and completed any requirements for the merit badge will be allowed the rest of 2026 to complete the full merit badge and still utilize it for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. This will only be allowed for those attaining Eagle Scout; any other Scouts who started requirements for the merit badge will not be allowed to earn the merit badge after the discontinuance date. This has been standard practice for Eagle requirements and other advancement changes in the past.

Effective Feb. 27, 2026, the rank of Eagle Scout will have 13 required merit badges instead of 14. All of the remaining 13 Eagle Required merit badges will still apply, just not Citizenship in Society, but Scouts will have 8 elective merit badges from which to choose instead of 7, and the total for Eagle Scout will remain at 21 merit badges (13 required + 8 elective = 21 merit badges).

Council & District Advancement Chairs as well as Council Registrars (Eagle Scout app processors) will have the ability to allow the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge to count towards Eagle Scout for those few Life Scouts who started the requirements prior to the discontinuance date, and will complete the merit badge before Dec. 31, 2026.

A New Tradition: The Eagle Scout Naming Class

The annual Eagle Scout Naming Class creates a lasting way to honor both the Scouts who achieve the Eagle rank and a sponsor whose values reflect the Scout Oath and Law. As the inaugural sponsor, Henry A. Legarre lends both his name and legacy to the Transatlantic Council Eagle Class of 2026. Every Scout earning the Eagle rank in TAC between January 1 and December 31, 2026 will receive a custom Council Shoulder Patch designed by Henry, symbolizing this unique recognition. These naming rights are entirely honorary, celebrating shared values and a meaningful connection between generations of Eagle Scouts. In addition, a portion of the sponsorship supports the Eagle Scout Scholarship Program, which will award scholarships to three outstanding members of the TAC Eagle Class of 2026, with applications open from January 1–31, 2027.

By sponsoring the Eagle Class of 2026, Henry A. Legarre exemplifies what it means to live a life guided by Scouting’s values: leadership, service, global citizenship, and commitment to youth. His name on this inaugural class is not just a recognition of past accomplishments, but an inspiration to every Scout who earns the Eagle rank in the Transatlantic Council next year.

The Transatlantic Council is honored to recognize Henry A. Legarre and proud to welcome the Eagle Scout Class of 2026 under his name, a class built on service, strengthened by tradition, and prepared to lead the future.

Scholarships

We all know A Scout is Thrifty, but are you aware of the many scholarships available to Eagle Scouts? Below are some of the awards available through the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA). Keep an eye on on the submission deadlines.

Some scholarships are part of the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year awards. 

Other scholarships Eagle Scouts who meet certain eligibility requirements can apply for include the following NESA Scholarships:

  • One recipient will be selected for a four-year $50,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (up to $12,500 per year for four years).
  • Four recipients will be selected for a four-year $30,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (up to $7,500 per year for four years).
  • One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $10,000 Lawrence S. and Mabel Cooke Scholarship (14 scholarships total).
  • One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $7,000 Hansen & Mary Hall Scholarship (14 scholarships total).
  • One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $6,000 National Eagle Scout Association Scholarship Endowment (14 scholarships total).
  • One recipient will be selected from each CST for a one-year $6,000 Lester S. McElwain Eagle Scholarship, Robert and Rebecca Palmer Eagle Scout Scholarship, or National Eagle Scout Association Legacy Society Scholarship (14 scholarships total).

    The application window opens December 2025

Hall/McElwain Scholarship
$5,000 scholarships awarded on a regional basis to Eagle Scouts who have shown active participation in school, Scouting activities and community service.

Palmer Scholarship
Three $2,500 scholarships awarded to Eagle Scouts who have shown active participation in school, Scouting activities and community service.

Sons of the American Revolution Scholarship
The Sons of the American Revolution invite all Scouting America registered Eagle Scouts in the Transatlantic Council to apply for the SAR King Eagle Scout Contest which gives away over $25,000 in prize money every year.  The top prize is $10,000.  For more information, see https://www.sar.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ESC_GermanySAR_TAC.pdf
