Building Leaders Through Adventure: IOLS Training in the Mediterranean District

There’s nothing quite like learning Scouting skills in the great outdoors, especially when the backdrop is the beautiful Mediterranean region! On August 29–30, the Transatlantic Council’s Mediterranean District brought Scouters together at Carney Park in Naples, Italy, for an Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) course. The weekend brought together nine dedicated volunteers, including Committee Members and Assistant Scoutmasters, for two days of hands-on learning, teamwork, leadership development, and plenty of Scouting fun.

IOLS is more than simply learning how to camp. It’s about developing the skills and confidence needed to create safe, meaningful, and memorable outdoor experiences for Scouts. Throughout the weekend, participants had the opportunity to put those skills into practice while working together as a team and embracing the challenges and fun that come with outdoor leadership.

And, of course, no Scouting weekend would be complete without a little adventure! The group made the most of their time at Carney Park, enjoying the camaraderie that makes Scouting special. From learning new skills to sharing experiences around camp, the weekend was a great reminder that some of the best leadership lessons happen outside the classroom.
