Arrowmen Restore Hidden Tennis Court During Weekend of Cheerful Service
Lakota Chapter of the Black Eagle Lodge – Spring Ordeal Weekend
Camp JET, Sembach, Germany | 29–31 May 2026
The 2026 Lakota Chapter Spring Ordeal welcomed both experienced members and new candidates into a meaningful experience centered on leadership, teamwork, and the values of the Order of the Arrow. A key highlight of the weekend was the completion of over eight hours of impactful service. Arrowmen worked to restore a long-forgotten tennis court that had been hidden for more than a decade beneath overgrowth of trees and brush. By the end of the weekend, the space had been brought back to life and is now ready for use by the Barbarossa District for Cub Scout and Scouting events, as well as community activities. The transformation turned an unused area into a renewed asset for future generations of Scouts and families.
Service efforts also extended across Camp JET itself, where Arrowmen helped clean and improve the grounds. These improvements created more usable space for units who regularly camp there, enhancing the overall experience for future visitors.
Of course, no Ordeal weekend would be complete without memorable meals and fellowship. Dutch oven creations were a standout feature, including lasagna, enchiladas, chocolate cherry dump cake, and peach cobbler. The food was so well received that every dish was finished—often with seconds and even thirds—leaving no one hungry and plenty of satisfied smiles around camp.
A total of 26 Ordeal candidates completed their induction and were officially welcomed into the Order of the Arrow during the weekend, while three members sealed their commitment by completing their Brotherhood membership.
The weekend also honored key members of the lodge and chapter with Vigil recognition, celebrating their outstanding service and dedication. Black Eagle Lodge Chief Aaron Groverman, Lakota Chapter Advisor Paul Skinner, and Steve Gierhahn were selected for the Vigil Honor and completed their Vigil ceremony during the weekend, marking the highest level of recognition within the Order of the Arrow.
The Spring Ordeal at Camp JET was a reminder of what makes the Order of the Arrow special: cheerful service, lasting friendships, and a commitment to leaving every place better than we found it.
