Weird Science in Belgium: Charlemagne District’s Fall Cub-o-ree a Hit with Families

Four Cub Scout Packs from across Charlemagne District gathered October 2–4, 2026, for the Fall Family Cub-o-ree at Hopper Jeugdverblijf Merkenveld in Loppem, Belgium, excited for an outdoor fun under the theme: Weird Science.

Pack 100 (Brunssum), Pack 325 (SHAPE), Pack 457 (Brussels), and Pack 3140 (The Hague, Netherlands) brought Cub Scouts and their families together for a weekend built around outdoor adventure, hands-on learning, and old-fashioned Scouting fellowship. The weather cooperated beautifully, giving families ideal conditions for camping and outdoor activities from Friday evening through Sunday’s closing ceremony.

A Weekend of Weird Science

Saturday was the heart of the event, with Cub Scouts rotating through five STEM-themed stations, each one designed to make science feel like an adventure:

  • Biology: Scouts built DNA double-helix models to explore the basics of genetics.
  • Engineering: The ever-popular Egg Drop Challenge had Cubs designing contraptions to protect an egg from a high-impact fall.
  • Physics & Chemistry: Scouts got hands-on with rocket building and launches, plus the always-explosive crowd favorite, Elephant Toothpaste.
  • Technology: Cubs learned the fundamentals of electricity by building and testing their own circuits.

By the time the sun went down, the learning gave way to tradition: a lively Saturday evening campfire featuring skits, songs, and stories from each Pack and Den, proof that even in a weekend devoted to science, Scouting fun never needs a battery.

Family Scouting in Action

What made the weekend work was a great combination of program and families. Parents pitched in throughout the camp, supporting activities, keeping Scouts safe and engaged, and helping run a well-organized event from start to finish. That kind of hands-on family involvement is what Cub Scouting is all about, and it showed in the strengthened bonds between Packs that carried through the whole weekend.

The Cub-o-ree wrapped up Sunday morning with campsite cleanup, a final site inspection, and an interfaith service, sending four Packs home a little closer, a little muddier, and a lot more curious about the world around them.

Congratulations to the Cub Scouts, families, and leaders of Pack 100, Pack 325, Pack 457, and Pack 3140 on a successful Fall Cub-o-ree.
