Eagle Scout Project Greatly Enhances the Vicenza Teen Center

The Vicenza Teen Center received a fresh new look and some much-needed improvements thanks to the service and leadership of Altan of Troop 295 in Vicenza, Italy.

Earlier this year, the Vicenza Teen Center reopened its doors after being closed for nearly three years following the relocation of Vicenza High School from Caserma Ederle to Villaggio. Recognizing an opportunity to help make the Teen Center a more welcoming and attractive place for military community youth, Altan worked with Youth Program Director Emily Beik to develop his Eagle Scout service project.

His project focused on revitalizing the Teen Center’s outdoor space. He planned and organized efforts to refurbish and paint the existing wooden planters, clean the entry patio, purchase and assemble a new bench, and plant herbs in all of the existing planters.

Over three days after school, Altan led fellow volunteers through the work, demonstrating the planning, organization, and leadership skills that are central to the Eagle Scout experience. Together, the volunteers transformed the outdoor area into a cleaner, more welcoming space for Teen Center visitors.

While carrying out the project, Altan also identified an additional opportunity to improve the area. The garrison benches with planters in front of the Teen Center had deteriorating wooden seats that needed attention. Going beyond his original project plan, Altan organized volunteers to remove the rotted wood seats. The team also used additional plants and soil to enhance the landscaping and improve the curb appeal of the Teen Center.

In total, Altan’s Eagle Scout service project contributed 69 hours of service to the USAG Italy community. Those hours included planning and organizing, logistics, volunteer leadership, and hands-on work to bring the project to completion.

Completing an Eagle Scout service project is a significant milestone, but it is not the final step in earning the rank. Following the successful completion of his project, Altan presented his work and accomplishments at his Eagle Scout Board of Review at Camp Avantura in Croatia, where he successfully passed his Board of Review and completed another important step toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

Altan’s project is a great example of the impact Scouts can have through thoughtful service and strong leadership. His willingness to recognize additional needs and inspire others to help became an opportunity to create a lasting improvement for the Vicenza community.
