Honoring the Fallen Across the Transatlantic Council This Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend across the Transatlantic Council was marked by reflection, service, and remembrance as Scouts and Scouters came together throughout Europe to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

From the Netherlands to Germany and Italy, Scouts stood alongside veterans, military leaders, families, and local communities to ensure the legacy of America’s fallen heroes is never forgotten.

A Meaningful Morning in the Netherlands

On Saturday morning, Scouts from Pack 100 participated in a deeply moving service project at the Netherlands American Cemetery.

The Scouts carefully placed both Dutch and American flags at gravesites ahead of the Memorial Day ceremony, honoring the thousands of American service members laid to rest far from home. Their quiet acts of service reflected the reverence and gratitude that define Memorial Day.

During the event, the Scouts also had the privilege of meeting U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands Joseph Popolo and his wife Christine making the experience even more memorable for the youth and families in attendance. For many Scouts, moments like these create lifelong connections to the meaning of citizenship, sacrifice, and service.

Scouts Support Memorial Day Ceremony in Stuttgart

In Germany, Scouts from Pack 113, Troop 44, and Troop 324 supported the Memorial Day ceremony hosted by VFW Post 10801 and American Legion Post 6 at United States Army Garrison Stuttgart.

They delivered a reading of the famous memorial poem In Flanders Fields, reminding all in attendance of the enduring cost of freedom. Following the reading, Scouts respectfully escorted ceremonial wreaths as veterans and community leaders paid tribute to America’s fallen service members.

Remarks from COL Judd Sanford, Commander of USAG Stuttgart, and Brigadier General Eero Keravuori of USAFRICOM emphasized the importance of remembering those who gave their lives not only in defense of the United States, but also in defense of liberty and hope around the world.

As Life Scout Zobie W. performed Taps and the JROTC Color Guard closed the ceremony, Scouts reflected on the deeper meaning of service and sacrifice. Their participation demonstrated the values of citizenship, leadership, reverence, and duty that remain at the heart of Scouting.

Service and Reflection in Florence

At the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, Scouts from across Spain and Italy gathered for the annual Order of the Arrow Mamchachwelendam Chapter Spring Fellowship service project. The Florence American Cemetery, which honors 4,398 American military dead and memorializes 1,409 missing in action from World War II, stands as one of the most solemn reminders of the cost of freedom in Europe.

For more than 15 years, Scouts of the Transatlantic Council have quietly served at this sacred site, carefully placing flags, cleaning headstones, and preparing the cemetery grounds ahead of Memorial Day observances.

Working in silence beneath the Tuscan sun, Scouts reflected on the ideals of brotherhood, cheerful service, and remembrance. Many of the participating youth come from active-duty military families stationed across Europe, making the experience especially personal and meaningful.

On Memorial Day morning, Scouts proudly raised both the American and Italian flags together during the ceremony, symbolizing the enduring friendship and shared sacrifice between nation There are few places more powerful for a Scout than a U.S. military cemetery overseas, a place where history, sacrifice, and service come together in profound silence.

The Spirit of Memorial Day

Across the Transatlantic Council, Scouts honored Memorial Day not simply through words, but through action.

They carried flags.
They read the names and stories of the fallen.
They stood in silence.
They served with humility and respect.

These moments remind us that Memorial Day is a promise that those who gave everything in service to others will always be remembered.
