Safeguarding Youth Training Refresher and Resources
The new Safeguarding Youth Refresher Training is now available online to help you renew this annual required training.
If you have completed the full Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) course and it is currently active or has expired within the last 7 days, you are eligible to take the Refresher Training.
If your full SYT training has been expired for 7 days or more, you will need to complete the full Safeguarding Youth Course again before receiving credit.
Participants taking the Refresher Training must successfully pass the exam on the first attempt to receive credit for the Y01 training code. If the exam is not passed, the system will automatically route you to the full Safeguarding Youth Course to ensure a complete review of the material. Once the refresher exam is failed, the refresher course cannot be relaunched, and the full course must be completed.
Please note: After you successfully complete the refresher training, your Safeguarding Youth Training certification will remain valid for one year from the date you pass the exam.
The refresher training begins with an overview of Scouting’s Barriers to Abuse, followed by an introduction to the SAFE Framework.
Throughout the training, you will see several QR codes. For your convenience, we have listed the linked resources below so you can access them easily.
Resources:
- Guide to Safe Scouting: A cornerstone resource for everyone in Scouting, this guide offers information on the latest policies and procedures, serving as your go-to manual to help you plan and provide a safe Scouting program. From camping protocols to aquatic activities, its detailed sections empower leaders to make informed decisions that benefit all participants’ welfare.
- Activity Planning and Risk Assessment: Units planning fun and exciting outdoor activities should be prepared for a safe activity.
- Age-Appropriate Guidelines for Safe Scouting: Tailor your activities to the maturity levels of your young members. This reference chart provides information allowing for every experience that can be stimulating and safe. With insights spanning from archery to wilderness adventures, it offers age-appropriateness guidelines that are useful in planning a safe environment for growth.
- SAFE Checklist: To help make Scouting America activities safer and reduce risk, the SAFE framework was developed with four key points: Supervision (qualified adult oversight) Assessment (risk evaluation and age-appropriateness), Fitness and skill confirmation (evaluating participants’ capabilities), and Equipment and environmental considerations (proper gear and monitoring conditions).
- Incident Reporting: Timely, clear, concise, and complete incident reports allow for an appropriate response and an opportunity for analysis while promoting continuous improvement of our programs. You can now report accidents, near misses, and membership infraction incidents to your local council or enter them yourself at www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/incident-report.
- Safety Moments: Utilize the extensive library of ready-to-use safety moments on Scouting Safely, covering a myriad of topics. These are regularly updated and expanded by Scouting America volunteers and professional staff.
- Annual Health and Medical Record: The Annual Health and Medical Record is a form used by Scouting America to ensure the health and safety of participants during Scouting activities. It provides medical information, consent for medical treatment, and details about a participant’s health history. This is especially important in the event a medical issue arises.
