Honoring the Legacy of Patrick Thomas

Honoring the Legacy of Patrick Thomas

As we close out this year, we pause to remember a Scouter whose passing left a lasting void in the Transatlantic Council family. Patrick Thomas was more than a volunteer leader; he was a mentor, advocate, and tireless champion for youth.

Patrick’s Scouting journey began in his youth, earning the Arrow of Light and advancing to Life Scout before military service took him on a different path. He often shared that his biggest regret was not completing the trail to Eagle Scout. Rather than allowing that regret to define him, Patrick transformed it into purpose, fueling a lifelong commitment to ensuring other Scouts had the guidance, encouragement, and support he wished he had at that pivotal moment.

When his sons joined Scouting, Patrick returned with unmatched energy, serving as a Den Leader, Cubmaster, and Troop Committee Chair, and later in key district and council roles including District Commissioner, District Advancement Chair, and District Committee Chair. In every position, he brought passion, organization, and an unwavering focus on youth.

Known for being “all in,” Patrick poured his energy into every event and every Scout. From being a NASCAR-style Pinewood Derby inspector and the heart of the Klondike Derby/ yeti mascot tradition at Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) to the annual Peace Light international distribution services in Austria, he worked tirelessly to ensure each experience was meaningful, fun, and memorable.

His passion was especially evident in his commitment to mentoring Eagle Scout candidates, guiding hundreds of Scouts toward achieving their highest rank and celebrating each accomplishment with genuine pride. Patrick’s extraordinary service was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award reflecting not just his leadership, but his unwavering willingness to serve wherever help was needed. In the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, he also received the Vigil Honor, the highest honor of the Black Eagle Lodge. The Vigil name given to him for this award was “He who cannot say no.” That just perfectly explains how Patrick approached things.

To ensure Patrick’s legacy continues, the Transatlantic Council has established a James E. West Fellowship in his name. This permanent endowment will support Scouting programs for generations to come, allowing Patrick’s “lengthened shadow” to remain on the trail long after this year ends. As we reflect on the year behind us and look ahead to the one to come, we remember Patrick Thomas for choosing the right path and for inspiring countless Scouts and Scouters to do the same.
