Wiesbaden Cub Scout Honored with Scouting America Heroism Award for Saving Brother’s Life

Heroism Award recipient Logan Miller

Logan Miller, a third-grade student and Cub Scout with Pack 13 at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, has been recognized with the prestigious Scouting America Heroism Award for his courageous and life-saving actions that helped rescue his brother from a near-drowning incident. The Heroism Award is one of the highest honors presented by Scouting America, recognizing members who demonstrated heroism and skill in averting serious injury or saving or attempting to save life.

Logan, who was only seven years old at the time, and his siblings were enjoying a day at home, playing in the pool and jumping on the trampoline, when he suddenly noticed his older brother, Mason, motionless at the bottom of the pool. The young Scout immediately jumped in and attempted to pull Mason out but quickly realized he couldn’t do it on his own. Understanding the urgency, Logan ran to alert his mother, then quickly found his father. While his parents responded to the emergency, he stayed with his younger sister, ensuring her safety and staying calm under pressure.

Logan has been a part of Cub Scouts since kindergarten, beginning his journey as a Lion Scout at just five years old. His family firmly believes that his years in Scouting helped prepare him to act decisively in a life-threatening situation. “I am convinced his Scout training since 5 years old, as a Lion, aided him in this rescue attempt. Mason would not be here today had Logan not done what he did. Logan is the hero of the family and saved his brother’s life,” said his father Joe Miller.

Although the experience was frightening, Logan credits his Scout training for teaching him both how to help others and how to seek assistance during emergencies. He is grateful that his brother survived and that he was able to help when it mattered most.  The Miller family attributes Logan’s bravery, calmness, and quick thinking with preventing a tragedy. His actions that day not only saved Mason’s life but demonstrated the powerful impact of youth who are trained to be prepared.

The Scouting community across the Transatlantic Council proudly recognizes Logan for living out the core values of Scouting even at such a young age. Logan attended the Transatlantic Council’s 75th Anniversary Celebration and was honored for his heroism during the Council Recognition Dinner on Saturday, November 15.
