Sustainability, Service, and Scouting Spirit in Doha

Sustainability, Service, and Scouting Spirit in Doha

From 5-8 February 2026, the Horizon District Camporee made history in Doha, Qatar. With a record-breaking 194 participants, this year’s Camporee was a powerful demonstration of growth, leadership, and Scouting spirit overseas.

Scouts BSA, Venturers, Sea Scouts, and Cub Scouts working toward Arrow of Light came together as one Scouting family. The energy across the campsite was unmistakable. Units set up camp side by side. Friendships formed quickly. Leaders collaborated. Youth stepped up. The Horizon District is thriving.

United under the theme of Sustainability, Scouts didn’t simply talk about protecting the planet. They practiced it.

Learning with Purpose: Advancement in Action

At the heart of every successful Camporee is meaningful programing. The 2026 Horizon District Camporee delivered hands-on learning experiences that supported advancement while reinforcing Scouting’s core values.

Scouts participated in merit badge sessions that included Citizenship in the World, Soil and Water Conservation, Sustainability, Archery, Cooking, and First Aid. Each session was practical and engaging.

Conservation service projects throughout the weekend helped bring these lessons to life. Scouts worked directly at the campsite to improve and protect their environment. These efforts supported the TAC Sustainability Award, the Messenger of Peace Award, and the World Conservation Award, reinforcing the global commitment of Scouting America to environmental stewardship.

For families and leaders across the Transatlantic Council, this Camporee demonstrated how outdoor programming and advancement can work hand in hand.

Training That Strengthens Units Across TAC

Strong units require trained leaders. This Camporee ensured that both youth and adults returned home better prepared.

Adult leaders and older youth participated in Range Safety Officer (RSO) Training, BB Rangemaster Training, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS), and Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO). These training opportunities are critical for delivering safe, high-quality outdoor programs across the Council.

IOLS and BALOO, in particular, help leaders build confidence in camping, Scoutcraft, and outdoor leadership. By offering these courses during the Camporee, Horizon District multiplied the impact of the weekend.

Global Village: The Spirit of Scouting Overseas

One of the most memorable moments of the weekend was the Global Village Dinner. In true Transatlantic Council fashion, cultures and cuisines blended into an evening of fellowship.

Participants shared dishes representing their diverse backgrounds and duty stations. Stories were exchanged. Laughter echoed across the dining area. It was a vivid reminder of what makes American Scouting overseas so unique.

Order of the Arrow: A Commitment to Service

The Order of the Arrow Desert Eagle Chapter held its OA Weekend in conjunction with the Camporee. Fifteen candidates completed their Ordeal, and three sealed their commitment as Brotherhood members.

These milestones reflect a continued dedication to cheerful service and servant leadership within Horizon District. The presence and participation of the OA reinforced the deeper purpose behind every Camporee, developing leaders of character.

Honoring Leadership, Building the Future

The Camporee also marked a meaningful leadership transition for Horizon District. The District expressed sincere gratitude to outgoing District Committee Chair Steve Sutton for his years of dedication and steady leadership. His work helped establish the strong foundation the District enjoys today. At the same time, the District welcomed incoming Chair DW Lee, who will carry that momentum forward. Leadership continuity ensures that Horizon District and the Transatlantic Council as a whole continues to grow and innovate.

A Milestone for the Transatlantic Council

The 2026 TAC Horizon District Camporee was defined by record attendance, meaningful advancement, impactful training, and a deep commitment to sustainability. It showcased what is possible when Scouts and leaders come together with purpose.

This camporee proved something powerful: when the Scouting community across TAC gathers with intention and spirit, we do more than host an event. We strengthen our movement.
