Sharing the Peace Light Across Borders
Each year, Scouts around the world take part in a powerful tradition: the sharing of the Peace Light. They carry a flame of hope, unity, and peace across borders, cultures, and communities. This year, Scouts of the Transatlantic Council proudly continued that tradition, living out the spirit of Scouting on a large international stage. On December 6, the Transatlantic Council delegation was honored to attend the large Peace Light service in Linz, Austria, where Scouts from many nations gathered to receive the flame. From that single light, hope spread outward as Scouts carried the Peace Light back to their home countries, symbolizing peace that transcends national boundaries.
In Berlin, Germany, Troop 46 participated in the Peace Light ceremony at St. Hedwig’s Cathedral on Sunday, December 14, the Third Sunday of Advent. The Scouts embraced the meaning of the moment and will continue sharing the light at their upcoming Court of Honor, inviting all attendees to bring a candle so they can take the Peace Light home and pass it on to others.
In Naples, Italy, American Scouts and Scouters from Troop 007, joined with Italian host-nation Scouts and Scouters at the Aversa train station on Saturday, December 13, to receive the Peace Light. A small but meaningful ceremony was held in front of the station, with Scouts and Scouters from both nations participating together. Following the ceremony, American Scouts transported the Peace Light to share with the U.S. military community at the local Navy base, while their Italian counterparts carried the light to their homes and parishes. Conversations shared between Scouts from different nations reflected friendship, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to peace. Scouting proved once again to be a universal language, one that unites us regardless of nationality or culture.
In Stuttgart, Germany, Scouts from Pack 44, along with their Troop 44 Den Chief, received the Peace Light at the Stuttgart train station on December 7. The Scouts shared the light with their Cub Scout pack and later, on December 18, passed it on to Troop 44 during a meaningful Scout-led ceremony, reinforcing the message of peace through youth leadership.
Through these shared moments, ceremonies, and acts of service, Scouts of the Transatlantic Council demonstrated that the Peace Light is more than a flame; it is a promise. A promise of hope, friendship, reverence, and unity. In carrying and sharing the Peace Light, our Scouts keep the Spirit of Baden-Powell alive and shining brightly across the world.
