Black Eagle Lodge Arrowmen Honor the Fallen at Florence American Cemetery
This Memorial Day weekend, Arrowmen from across the Transatlantic Council proved exactly what it means to live out our purpose. Leaving behind our everyday routines in Spain and Italy, the youth and adult leaders of Black Eagle Lodge gathered in the heart of Tuscany for a weekend defined by deep reverence, profound reflection, and tireless, cheerful service.
For 15 years, our Lodge has answered the call to serve at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial. For many of our Arrowmen, who are daughters and sons of active-duty U.S. military families stationed here in Europe, this wasn’t just another service project. It was a deeply personal tribute to the legacy of American sacrifice on the very soil where freedom was won.
A Symmetrical Sea of Honor
The Florence American Cemetery spans 70 beautiful, sobering acres. Its curved rows of headstones hold the remains of 4,398 fallen. These brave U.S. Service members from the Army, Army Air Forces, and Merchant Marine gave everything during the brutal fighting that pushed past Rome and into the Apennines Mountains before the enemy forces in northern Italy finally surrendered on May 2, 1945.
Among them rest two Medal of Honor recipients whose names are inscribed in gold. Connecting the memorial’s north and south atrium stand the Tablets of the Missing, bearing the names of another 1,409 missing in action, including a third Medal of Honor recipient.
Cheerful Service in Solemn Silence
This year as in the past 15 years (except for the lockdown during Covid), male and female Scouts of the Scouting America, Transatlantic Council, came together from their homes in Spain, and Italy to participate in the Order of the Arrow (OA), Mamchachwelendam Chapter Spring Fellowship service project conducted at the Florence American Battle Monuments Cemetery. Their OA service project was completed under the Tuscan sun in silence. This gives them time to reflect on their participation and with thoughts of brotherhood and cheerful service. As needed, Arrowmen carefully washed and cleaned soiled headstones, restoring them to a pristine white. Rows that began the weekend bare were transformed as Scouts meticulously placed American and Italian flags at every single grave.
The cemetery service reached its moving conclusion on Monday morning. Following the Memorial Day Ceremony, our Scouts briskly and proudly raised both the American and Italian flags together, reaching the top of the masts in unison exactly at noon.
Strengthening the Fire: Fellowship and Induction
While our hearts were at the cemetery, our home base for the weekend was the Gabbiano Scout Base Camp in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Florence. Here, the Mamchachwelendam Chapter held its Spring Fellowship, strengthening the bonds of our Lodge and welcoming a new generation of leaders.
- 11 New Ordeal Members: These candidates successfully completed their trials, reflecting on their journey in Scouting and the foundational values of the Scout Oath and Law through a series of demanding tasks. Welcome to the fire, brothers.
- 6 Brotherhood Members: These Arrowmen sealed their membership, marking the completion of their induction and firmly committing themselves to the future service of Black Eagle Lodge.
- 1 Vigil Honor Distinction: We celebrate one of our own who completed their Vigil. The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction reserved strictly for Arrowmen who, through exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest, have made distinguished contributions far beyond the responsibilities of their position.
Carrying the Spark Forward
Whether scrubbing a headstone in silence, placing a flag, or taking a solemn vow under the Tuscan stars, the Arrowmen of Black Eagle Lodge demonstrated that the spark of the Order burns as bright as ever in Europe.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial for their partnership, to the parents and drivers who traveled across borders, and to our newly advanced brothers. Most of all, we honor the fallen who rest in the soil of Italy. We will continue to remember them through our service.
