Scouts Explore New Skills at Edelweiss District Merit Badge University

It was a day full of discovery, learning, and hands-on adventure at the annual Edelweiss District Merit Badge University, held at Camp Freedom. Scouts from across the district came together to dive into new subjects, challenge themselves, and take meaningful steps forward in their Scouting journey.

Throughout the day, Scouts had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of merit badges, each one designed to introduce new skills, spark curiosity, and build confidence. From outdoor skills and STEM topics to leadership and life skills, there was truly something for every interest. Whether a Scout was trying something completely new or advancing toward a long-term goal, the experience encouraged growth in a fun and supportive environment.

What Are Merit Badges?

Merit badges are a core part of the Scouts BSA program. They give Scouts the chance to explore different fields, from science and technology to outdoor adventure, health, and the arts. Each badge represents a set of skills learned and goals achieved, guided by experienced mentors known as merit badge counselors.

Earning merit badges helps Scouts:

  • Discover new interests and potential career paths
  • Build confidence through hands-on learning
  • Develop real-world skills they can use for life
  • Progress toward the prestigious Eagle Scout rank

Events like Merit Badge University are especially valuable because they bring experts and Scouts together in one place, creating an environment of collaboration, mentorship, and exploration.

A Community Effort

This successful event would not have been possible without the dedication of the many volunteers, merit badge counselors, and leaders who gave their time and expertise. Their passion for teaching and mentoring made a lasting impact on every Scout in attendance.

A special thank you goes to Randy, whose outstanding kitchen support ensured everyone was well taken care of throughout the day. His efforts behind the scenes allowed leaders and volunteers to stay focused on delivering high-quality activities and meaningful experiences for the Scouts.
