Family Troop Option Available
Over the past week, councils received word that the National Executive Board for Scouting America formally approved the “Family Troop” concept. It will be available to all chartering organizations as a third option as of December 15th, 2025. Current single gender Troops will have the choice to organize as boy troops or girl troops, or combine and become a Family Troop.
Troops will need to consider what path they would like to take. If the decision is to remain a single gender unit, no additional actions will need to be taken and they can continue to operate like they have been. If the Charter Partner decides they would like to operate as a family troop they will have to complete an “Intent to Convert” form that will need to be to be signed by the Charter Representative and returned to the council announcing their official desire to a become a co-ed Family Troop. To help with the decision, Scouting America has made available both a Family Troop Decision Guide and a Family Troop Best Practices. At this time there is no guidance from Scouting America as to when this decision must be made.
More information is expected to be forthcoming from Scouting America soon, and once we have similar information, we can work on the next steps needed for the program and the troop’s charter renewal.
Please watch your inboxes for messages from Scouting America and Transatlantic Council. Thank you for your patience as we navigate this new program element that is being implemented on December 15th.
